A heat island is a metropolitan area with a significantly higher temperature than its surrounding rural areas due to human activities such as urbanization, industrialization and changes in land use. This phenomenon occurs when buildings, roads, and other infrastructure absorb and trap heat, creating microclimates that are warmer than the surrounding environment. Heat islands can lead to increased energy consumption for cooling, higher air pollution levels, and exacerbated health issues such as heat stress and respiratory problems.
